Review of "Older Than My Mother," by Augusta Gale

NEWS 4 NEW ENGLAND - WBZ TV

"Older Than My Mother" is an intimate account of one woman's struggle with breast cancer. It is full of common sense, grace and hope. Augusta Gale, who was born in a small town in Louisiana, is a born story teller. A registered nurse, she gives us the facts of her illness, but more importantly she gives us details of her inner experience -- all the usually unspoken fears and concerns, the things women might whisper to each other privately. Here Augusta writes them down so that those with cancer might dare to question and triumph. Her words are an elixir of empowerment. Many people advocate 'self-advocate," but Gale's clear, Homespun pros and utter lack of guile offer a blueprint for action. Augusta has taken on the medical establishment one doctor at a time, and taken control of her life in the process. She has also found her way through a thicket of insurance company bureaucrats, and in one memorable anecdote, tells of taking her case all the way to the white house - with extraordinary results.

Through it all, Ms. Gale seems neither argumentative nor harsh, but rather, impeccably just and decent. The tale does meander a bit. We may be wondering why we're reading about her parent's divorce, a hold-up in a beauty salon, or the subtle racism she encountered living in New England. But finally, it makes sense; the book is as quirky and eccentric as anyone might seem with her guard down, and this may be the book's greatest gift. Augusta's openness is gently uplifting. She is not only "older than (her) mother" - she may be one of the oldest and wisest souls on the planet.
